this is way after the shadow cats, but you know
Arissa sang quietly under her breath as she worked on gear for her mount. The piece she was working on was a chest shield. It was about 16 feet long, for her mount wasn’t a horse but a Shadow-Winged Snake. She was singing a bound on it to keep it strong to protect her mount. Arissa finished polishing the chest shield and held it up to the faint sunlight that came in the windows of the work room. “Hmm perfect.” She said to herself. She picked up the helmet and started working on it.

Far to the north a boy ran down the street. His brown hair bounced as his feet hit the cobblestone street “Stop thief!” Came a shout from behind him. He kept running, clutching a bag of stolen goods, his hazel eyes wide. Until, that is, he ran smack into a girl of about his age. They both went sprawling in the street his sack of goods going everywhere. “Hey watch it!” He hissed. The girl looked surprised
“I’m sorry.” She said. She stood up and held out a hand. He didn’t take it. Instead he stood up and started to gather his things.
“Well, well, well if it isn’t Kadin.” Came a voice. Kadin rolled his eyes and stood up slowly. The girl turned around and saw the captain of the guard. “Thank you, miss, you helped to apprehend a criminal.” He said.
“Oh really? Your welcome.” She said surprised. Kadin rolled his eyes.
“Captain Hunter, if your going to draw her into you little game, spare the sweet talk.” He drawled. Captain Hunter scowled at him
“Your one to talk.” He said “Your about to be killed.” The girl looked confused
“But why?” She asked. Hunter rolled his eyes ‘
“What was your name, sweetheart?” he asked.
“Ayanna” She said.
“Ayanna, honey. This young man’s a dangerous criminal.” Kadin rolled his eye’s pulling a face at Hunter’s back. “He needs to be killed or he could hurt some one.”
Ayanna glanced at Kadin, or where he was.
“I think you need to go get him, then.” She said. Hunter turned
‘Why you idiots!” he yelled. “You let him get away!!”
Kadin laughed as he ran through the streets. That Ayanna girl was the perfect distraction. He paused; he hoped she wouldn’t get hurt, stupid conscience. Why did he care? Sighing he turned and headed back to where he left Ayanna.
Ayanna was surprised at the hostility from the guards.
“You helped him escape!!” Hunter yelled at her.
“No, I just bumped into him.” Ayanna said. She was worried about how this would turn out. The guards had formed a circle around her.
“You little liar!!” Hunter snapped, and went to slap her. Ayanna ducked and backed up slightly. “Get back here!” he snarled. Suddenly to his left, one of his men fell down with a loud thump. He spun around.
“How do you like that?” Kadin shouted, holding a sling in one hand.
“After him!” Hunter shouted distracted from Ayanna by Kadin. He turned and ran up the street. The squad ran up the street, chasing after him. He took a short cut down an ally. He stopped panting, snickering slightly as the squad ran past the ally. He noticed suddenly Hunter wasn’t with them. Growling at himself under his breath he sneaked back to where Hunter had been standing. He was there holding Ayanna’s arm. Kadin sighed, why did he do things for people. He spun his sling around, his hazel eyes locked on his target. He let off the stone. It hit Hunter in the jaw, causing him to slump over, knocked out.
“Come on!!” He shouted pulling Ayanna.
“Ahh!” She shrieked jerking around as she was tugged around. He continued running until he reached a good hiding place.
“Let go of me!” Ayanna said. He didn’t release her but stood there glaring at her.
“Do you how much trouble you just go me in!” He hissed at her.
“Let go of me.” She repeated calmer now. He glared at her.
“no.” he said. She silently stared at him. Suddenly he felt a shock that left him temporarily paralyzed. When he got control back he let go, fast.
“y-you’re a host??” He asked, shrinking back against the wall. Northlanders where afraid of magic.
Ayanna nodded “Yes, I am.” Then seeing the look on his face “What you don’t like magic?” Kadin nodded. He was worried, he had hear that hosts did some terrible things to people that displeased them. Ayanna was confused for a second, and then she remembered. “Oh, do you think I’m going to hurt you?” She said. Kadin nodded again, trying to think of a way to suck up to her. ‘Well, don’t worry about it.” She said. Kadin was relived, but was still unsure.
“You promise?” He asked. Ayanna nodded. Kadin almost sighed with relief. Almost, but he held it back. “So are you new here?” He asked
“Yes, well, just to here. I lived in the Northlands all my life.” She sighed. “I don’t to big cities. People tend to be afraid of me.” Kadin bobbed his head. He could understand why.
“So do you want me to show you around?’ Kadin asked. Ayanna smiled sadly.
“Well where I wanted to go, I don’t think you could take me.” Ayanna said.
Kadin smiled “I can take you anywhere you want me to.”
“I’ll take you word for it.” Ayanna said. “I want to get to the Great Library.”
Kadin paled “T-the Great Library. I can try.” He said” You know that the library is under the strictest watch?”
Ayanna smiled “I know but I half to get a book from there.”
Kadin gulped “My I ask what kind of book?”
Ayanna smiled. “One concerning Full-hosts, and they’re mounts.” She said

Kadin was breathing quietly as he snuck up to the gates that led to the palace proper. He had heard that hosts had put bounds on the proper to keep intruders out. He jumped as Ayanna came up behind him. How much farther? She asked inside his head. Kadin shuttered involuntarily. We’re almost there. He answered. Good. Ayanna thought. Kadin shivered, this girl seemed confident that they would make it in. He watched her. Her pretty silver hair gleamed in the moonlight. He noticed that it had a single blond streak thought it. Her pale blue eyes glinted with intent. He didn’t know why but he was scared of her. He had seen that she was very nice, and naïve, but there was a underlying power to her that he didn’t understand. He led her across the courtyard and into the Library foyer. Her slipper-like shoes made no noise on the polished marble floor. The more she was with him the more he thought that she was of high standing. It made him even more nervous of her. He paused at the door of the Library. What’s wrong? She asked.
Nothing, I’m just a little on edge. Do you know where this book is? He said. Ayanna nodded in confirmation. He put his hands on the gilded handle of the doors, and pushed slightly. They paused, when nothing happened they proceeded. Ayanna suddenly stiffened. Kadin paused and glanced at her. She was muttering something under her breath, a bound he recognized. Surprised he realized that he could understand her.
‘Make us hidden from eyes unseen.’ She said. He silently repeated the phrase. They walked down the rows of books, Ayanna in the lead. She was counting rows. She turned down one on the rows. He went to fallow her. Wait she said holding out a hand to stop him be my lookout please. Kadin nodded. She disappeared into the darkness of the row.
It seemed like hours before he heard a noise.
“Ayanna?” he whispered. He didn’t get an answer. The noise was getting closer now. He recognized it as soldiers marching. They where headed toward Kadin. He shrank back to the shadows of the row. Hurry Ayanna he thought to himself. A grope of soldiers marched up to the row, each holding torches. Kadin shrank back when the light fell on him. He was surprised when they didn’t see them, but then remembered the bound that Ayanna had done. The squad leader looked surprised when the light didn’t revile anyone.
“There’s someone down here.” He said to the squad. “Find them.” Kadin stiffened, and wished that Ayanna would hurry. He jumped as he felt a hand brush against him. Be still Ayanna said they can still hear you. Why are they here?
Someone knows we’re here. Kadin answered. She wrinkled her nose in disbelief. She held up an old book. Well I got it anyway. Let’s go. They headed to the door being as silent as possible. Suddenly there was a cry of “There they are!!” Ayanna turned and gasped as she saw a tall figure standing pointing at them. She froze staring at the figure.
Kadin, who had started running, paused when he noticed that Ayanna wasn’t behind him.
“Come on!” He said. She didn’t move, but continued to stand there, staring. He ran back and tugged on her sleeve. “Come on.” He repeated. She turned as if dazed.
“yah, ‘mkay.” She said and following him. Suddenly a wall of sparkling blue magic came up, blocking there path. Kadin stopped, causing Ayanna to bumped into him.
“Wh-a-at” he asked confused and scared. Ayanna spun around and said “Shield.” A wall of cranberry red light came up between them. “Kadin?’ She asked.
“Y-yes?’ he asked.
“You alright? You didn’t touch the barrier?” Ayanna was concerned.
“No, what is it?” he asked. Ayanna pulled of the bag she was wearing and handed it to him.
“No time to explain, here take this. As soon as I take this down run.” Ayanna said. Kadin nodded, still confused. Ayanna turned to the barrier of blue light that was between them and escape.
“Break.” She said. Nothing happened, so she tried again. Still with no response, she turned confused back to her own shield. The gauds where trying to break though, with no success. They’re weapons bounced harmlessly against it. Kadin could see the fear in they’re eyes. He himself was scared, but Ayanna seemed to be able to protect them.
The figure, now in the moonlight that came in from the rose window in the ceiling, told them to stop. His voice sent shivers down Kadin’s back. Ayanna ignored him. “Wall of light, tall and bright, fall and let us pass.” She said. The blue wall fell. Kadin took off running. Ayanna turned to her shield.
“Now cant we work this out?’ She asked the figure.
“You are a traitor and a nescience.” The figure answered. “I shall not agree to any compromise other than your death.”
Ayanna wince “Are you sure, we could talk about it over dinner or something.” Her only response was a burst of grey light hitting her shield. Ayanna stepped back. “I guess not.” She said “But, Jrenca, this is your first warning. The council will soon come and out an end to your misuse.”
The figure laughed “The council is nothing but a group of fools.”
Ayanna shook her head and ran.

In the city streets far below, Kadin ran towards his hideout. Panting slightly he took an ally way into the lower city. Beggars and the poor ignored him as he rand past, most where fugitives also. The only thought in Kadin’s mind was to put as much distance in between himself and the Great Library. Panting he ran into his abandoned storehouse. He flopped down on the bed. Taking off the bag he opened it and looked at the book inside. The Winged Snakes and Their Care. The cover said. It was gilded and boasted a beautiful picture of a winged snake. He opened it up to the first page and read
The Winged Snakes are the traditional mounts of the Full-host Council. There is a different kind of winged snake for the different types of magic. The oldest breed is the air-winged snakes. It has a has no limbs besides it’s obvious wings…………
Kadin read until her fell asleep.
Ayanna was glad that she had put a small tracker spell on Kadin after telling him to run. She followed his glowing footsteps, it looked like he was in a rush. She pulled her brown cloak closer around her. She was uncomfortable in the lower city. The building and the people scared her. She had no idea places like this existed. Some of the men on the streets where drunk and over confident. Thieves moved thought them as easily as she would walk in a filed. Several looked to try her but the look on her face warned them off. If they could see her more noble cloths she would’ve probably been mobbed. She found the storehouse and walked in to find Kadin sprawled out on a straw mattress, snoring. The book lay open to the section about war-winged snakes. Ayanna carefully picked it up and placed it back in the bag. She slung it over her shoulder.
“ Kadin.” She said. Kadin mumbled something and turned over. “Kadin.” She said a little louder. Kadin groaned and rolled over again. She bent down and shook him “Kadin!” She yelled at him.
“huu what!!!” He said sitting up his hand going to the knife at his belt. Looking up he saw Ayanna. “How’d you get here?” He asked.
”No time,” Ayanna said “We need to go before we’re followed.”
“Wha-a-t!” Kadin said “I’m not going anywhere.”
“Yes, you have to go. If not then they’ll find you.” Ayanna said. Kadin scowled
“I’m not going.” He said. Ayanna sighed
“Please, Kadin you need to. If they catch you………..” She broke off tears welling up in her eyes. Kadin was taken back, she really cared for him
“Ayanna I’m sorry, but I’ve lived here all my life.” He said. Ayanna continued crying
“B-but if you stayed here then you’d g-get hurt, and I would hate for that to happen on my account.” She said. Kadin sighed.
“I’ll go with you, ok?” He said “But you have to get me back here someday, alright.” Ayanna nodded, wiping some of the tears away. “So lets get going.” He said. “What do we need.” He asked.
“Some horses would be nice.” Ayanna said. Kadin nodded. He could get horses.

They where several day out of the city, headed south. Once they where out in the country, Ayanna was more relaxed and open. Kadin discovered that she had a bubbly personally and that she loved the open spaces. He listened to everything that she said about the outside world. He had never been outside the city before and wanted to learn everything he could about his new environment. She told him about the different birds and animals that where out here on the rolling plains. He in turn showed her how to build a fire and other city tricks.
Ayanna was in the middle of telling him about the type of stream fish they where eating when she paused.
“we’re being followed.” She said. Kadin looked up from his fish. “
