After Cloud's first real fight in Kvatch, he traveled throughout the land. Then, he came upon a large pyramid-like structure. It was about one hundred feet tall and seventy-five feet wide. Cloud had never seen such a strange sight. He decided to check it out. So, he went over to the mysterious pyramid and scanned it for an entrance. There were a few stones that looked loose. He went over to them and tried to push them in, so he could get in the pyramid. They successfully gave way to Cloud's strength, and Cloud walked in, carefully.

Cloud observed the room he was in. It was a small hallway. He could barely walk through it without having to avoid hitting his head on the ceiling. He walked through the hallway, and gasped at what he saw inside. It was a large, faintly lit room. That's strange, Cloud thought. How could this room have any candlelight? He had seen no other possible entrance, and the stones that blocked the doorway he had come in through had thick layers of dust. And he doubted that anyone could live in here. He pushed the thought aside and focused on the details of the room. It must've been the only room in the whole pyramid, besides the hallway. There were six torches on both the left and the right side of the room. At the end of the room was a tablet with strange writing. Cloud decided to observe it, so he started toward it. Almost immediately, his foot found a rope above the floor. The rope triggered a trap, and arrows zoomed toward Cloud on each side.

Cloud ducked just in time. The arrows thudded into either wall. Cloud stood up, now wary. He moved forward, cautiously, looking out for traps. He noticed several, and avoided them. He finally got to the other wall, unscathed. He carefully inspected the tablet. He didn't understand what was written on it. He noticed a strange combination lock at the bottom. He allowed his hand to go over the lock wondering what complex combination opened such a vault. Then something strange happened. He could no longer control his hand. His hand, unbiddingly turned the combination lock and then pushed it. The tablet rose up, revealing a room!

Suddenly, without warning, a man appeared in the room. "You, graverobber, thief! Leave immediately and never come back!" he said. The man was old, in his eighty's, Cloud guessed. He was about six feet tall and wore a golden turban, golden robes, and a golden kilt. He had a huge sheath on his back, fitted with an equally large sword. His turban covered up any head hair he might of had, but he had a grey mustache and looked like a seasoned warrior. Cloud became frustrated. How could one talk to him like that. He wated an explanation. "Who are you and what is this place?" he asked. The man ignored his questions and repeated, "Leave this place immediately and never come back!!" Cloud was losing his temper. "Look, I'm not leaving this place without an explanation!" The man drew his sword. It's blade was about six feet long and two inches thick. He maneuvered it as if it were a light dagger. "Very well, you'll get an explanation," he said, "When you defeat me."

Cloud drew his blade. "If it's a fight you want, it's a fight you'll get," he said. He had no idea how he was going to defeat a warrior with so much experience and a sword of such size. But he was determined to fight the man regardless. "Foolish boy," the man said. He came at Cloud and made a downward vertical swipe. Cloud tried to block, but the man's sword cut Cloud's blade clean off the hilt. The man did not care and did not take advantage of his oppenent's misfortune. Instead, he backed off. Cloud stared at the hilt, disbelievingly. He then recovered from his shock and cast the hilt aside. Cloud wasn't only trained in swordfighting, bu also in hand-to-hand combat. He leapt up in the air and brought his foot down, aiming it at his opponent.

The man neatly sidestepped. Cloud landed on his feet. "You may give up now, and do as I said, if you do not wish to die." In the heat of battle, Cloud's fear had deserted him. "Fat chance," he replied, and dealt his opponent a swift right punch to the nose. The man took it but not before nicking Cloud's left shin area. Cloud gritted his teeth. The man wiped his nose clean of blood with his fist. He showed no signs of feeling pain. He nodded to Cloud, "You do not give up. You are brave, I'll give you that. But fear sometimes keeps you safe. There is a boundary between bravery and foolishness. And you've crossed that boundary into foolishness. This is a fight you cannot win." Cloud stared hard at him, contemplationg his words. After a long silence he answered, "I would be a fool if I ran every time an experienced warrior fought me. I can learn from my defeats, and I do not die easily." Cloud might have been fooling himself, but he thought he saw an impreessed expression appear on the man's face, for a short time. "You are wise for your age boy. You have proved yourself worthy of the honor I will bestow upon you. I will tell you of this place, and who I am, and what I protect, and what you will be protecting in my place very soon."

((thanks))
Cloud stared at the man in disbelief. The man continued. "My name is Maître," he said. "I am the guardian of this sacred place." Cloud introduced himself as well, "I am Cloud Strife. What do you mean by what I will soon be protecting?" Maître explained, "I am old. I will soon pass on, but there was no one to take up my task for me once I am gone. Now there is. You. You will take up my sword and protect the power that I protect." Cloud had lost Maître at the word "I". But, he managed to get most of what he was saying. "What is the 'power that you protect'?" Cloud asked. Maître replied, " Even I do not know its full extent. It is a power beyond measure. It is beyond the use of any mortal. That is why I protect it. To keep it out of the wrong hands. Do you understand?" "Yes, I... I think so, but does this mean I have to live here for the rest of my days?" Maître chuckled, something Cloud didn't know he was capable of. "No, of course not, my lad. That is why I am giving you my sword. It will magically teleport you here every time the tablet is unlocked. Then, it will teleport you back to your former location. Go ahead. Take it. It is not heavy, for one who is ment to have it, that is." He gave the sword to Cloud.

Suprisingly, the sword wasn't heavy. It fitted Cloud just right. Maître also gave Cloud the sheath. "It is your responsibility now. I trust that you will defend this power with your life." "I will," said Cloud. "Thank you sir." "But never, ever lose the sword. For, if you do, someone could get their hands on this power and then, there would be none to stop them." "I won't lose it." Maître nodded. "You should know, too, that its name is Grève. It will never become dull. It will serve you well in years to come." "But what if I lose the blade? What should I do if that ever happens?" Maître was gone. He had disappeared, probably giving him the last experience of the sword's power that he would recieve again. So, Cloud left the room, taking care to shut and lock the tablet-door. He exited the pyramid and set out for a quest to seek more knowledge and skill, with his new sword, Grève.
