Cloud wanders for months, until he stumbles across the ruined city of Kvatch. Two guards see him and shout "Who goes there?" "I am Cloud, a passing traveler," Cloud says. The guards eye him suspiciously. "No travelers come to Kvatch. You must be an enemy!" Cloud rolls his eyes, annoyed. He says, "I told you, I am a traveler, not an enemy." The guards ignore Cloud and charge him, one holding a spear and the other, a sword.

"So be it," Cloud says. He draws his large sword and swipes at the guard nearest to him, the one with the spear. Cloud's sword hits the guard's shoulder.

The guard drops his spear and yells curses at Cloud. The other guard swings his sword, hitting Cloud in the thigh. Cloud winces and slashes at the guard, until the guard is on the ground, fighting for breath.

The other guard picks his spear up with his good arm and charges at Cloud. Cloud nimbly steps aside and stabs him in the back.

Cloud breaths a heavy sigh of regret. He didn't want to hurt the guards but did he have a choice? He thought about what to do with them. They were still alive and he couldn't leave them there to die. It wasn't right.

Cloud decided to take them to a nearby healer. He brought out bandages and nursed the guards' and his own wounds. He then carefully slung them on his back and walked, with difficulty, to the nearest healer.

When Cloud walked into the healer's house, he saw no potions, no bandages, nothing that a healer would normally have. "What is this? Two unconscious guards?" The healer asked. The looked very wise. She was a woman in her nineties, with numerous wrinkles, but eyes that looked as if they had seen everything. Cloud decided to tell the healer everything. "You're right. You took the only action a person in your situation could." "Maybe a little bit too much, though," the healer added under her breath.

Cloud left the guards in care of the healer. He had come to trust her, despite her being a stranger. She said she would nurs the guards back to health, and afterwords, give them a lecture of their wrongdoigs. So, Cloud left, still a lttle guilty.
