"Anyone out there?" Dameus called. Zeth turned to him fiercely and growled. Thieves weren't supposed to ask politely if anyone was 'out there'!
"Sorry..."
They advanced further into the darkness. Further and further.
Ugh! It stunk horribly!
A clang here... A shuffle there...
Funny, actually. That was usually a thief. A thief liked to taunt his prey. It was worth a laugh, above all.
Ahh... But whence on the other side of the taunting, now, Dameus actually felt... Nor..mal? If that would even describe it. He was unsure.
Both thieves halted, they had come to a dead end. A wall stretched far above their heads, the only light coming from the sputtering torch held by a chain chandelier on the cieling. It was an enormous chandelier, several spikes and sharp figurements. Easily a weapon if you ever had the time, not to mention strength, to use it.
"That chandelier would make a great swing, wouldn't one think..."
Zeth rolled his eyes and turned around, Dameus following suit.
There was no point facing the wall of a dead end, now, was there?
Holding their daggers properly, Dameus and Zeth protruded the blades onto the wall as they walked, sparks flying, but illuminating the path ahead of them.
"Stop..." Zeth motioned, eyes very straightforward.
"What is it?"
"Something is right there-- in front of us... See?"
Dameus focused his vision. Yes, there was something there... A bit darker than everything else...
What was it?
Zeth took silent steps forward, inching like a cat stalking another animal.
Feet not making a sound.
His blade drew close to the dark figure, and Zeth prodded it swiftly.
Eh?
Nothing.
"Anything happen?" Dameus whispered to Zeth, eyes wondering.
"Nope..."
"I'll get a candle."
Dameus walked into the large room, Zeth still watching the... thing...
The entire hallway was black, other than the small torch. They could not see the cieling, they could not see the ground, they could not see the exact sides of the room, but they could see candles far in the distance, within the room they had just come out of.
Dameus grabbed several candles, making sure not to get his face burned off. It was a large sum he carried over to Zeth. Nothing had happened other than Dameus grabbing the candles. Nothing.
It was silent.
Very silent.
Just how thieves liked it, eh?
"Nothing still..."
Dameus nodded and reached to hand Zeth a candle- ah!!
The wax touched his finger!! Aah! It burned horribly, Dameus letting go his grip of all the candles and shaking his burnt hand around, it stung!!...
Wait...
The candles fell, but onto something soft.
The ground was set alit.
"...Oh my gods..."
Dameus forgot the pain in his finger at what next happened.
Flames burst across the room.
A room full now of flaming ravaged corpses, all of men.
Something killed them...
Something killed them all...
"Dameus, we need to get away now..."
"Right... How?"
"Run."
"Why run?"
"There's fire. It's not fun messing with fire.
Neither is it fun waiting around for fire to reach a vault of the king's exploding tea bags."
"Oh dear... Shall we?"
Both thieves made a run for it. However this night might end, it would not end pretty.
"So, any ideas on how to escape 'o Wise One?"
"Don't call me that... And, no."
They each darted around corners, towards what they thought to be an exit. Somewhere with windows.
It was always such a dramatic parting whenever they crashed through windows.
It was also frankly fun.
if you consider jumping out of a window trying to escape an explosion from fire and teabags 'fun'.
That was, in Dameus' mind.
And there they went, jumping out of a window.
Escaping the flaming doom of exploding tea bags.
Kaboom, yes.
Now, what to do?
They were each on the cieling of an enormous building, still darting away.
Regal guards wouldn't just let an explosion bypass their thoughts, gazes, and actions.
"There's one of 'em. I'll do it." Dameus reported, reaching towards the back end of his belt and pulling out a crossbow.
Not just any crossbow, unlucky guards.
It was a constant-shot crossbow. It could shoot about twenty rounds before it needed reloading.
That's a joy for thieves.
A curse for anyone else.
Dameus aimed carefully, his shot lining up with the forehead of guard number one at a... moderate pace.
Readied...
Aimed...
There! Straight in... the neck?
"I missed again!!"
"Practice when we escape this."
"Fine..."
Well, down went guard number one.
Now for number two...
Ready... aim at his head... Fire.
Shoulderhit.
Great.
How 'deadly' of a thief to waste a crossbow arrow on a guard's shoulder!
Dameus aimed at guard number three.
Oh, crap.
Number three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and nine...
Wait....
No, ten.
Ten!! Joyous!!
And even better, they had crossbows to!!
"Duck!!"
"A duck?"
"GODS HELP US, ZETH DUCK!!!"
"Oh..."
Zeth threw himself forward, rolling across the ground, raising back up behind a pillar. Dameus face first towards the floor.
A shower of bolts flew past them far into the black endless night.
"Haha, I'm better at rolling than yooou."
Dameus grumbled and got to his feet.
It would be about a minute and the guards would reach them.
Their shuffling and yells in the night did ring.
Two thieves running from an exploded and burning building.
Suspicious? Most likely.
The guards, Dameus heard (his hearing was 'superior' to everyone elses for some reason) were aligning and ready to shoot two advancing thieves if they were only stupid enough to run out into crossbow range.
"The guards are readying their bows, what should we do?"
"...I have no idea, as usual."
Dameus was silent, but that silence smiled just as he grinned.
"I know..."
Zeth cocked his head, unsure what Dameus meant.
"Are you any good at throwing rocks?"
"Ha!! Sure, I guess. I'll start."
"Me to..." Dameus' eyes snaked around the ground for pebbles and rocks, whatever there was to throw.
...
That was what Dameus called "A pile of rocks!!"
Zeth grabbed one after another and they tossed rocks behind them.
Brilliant!! Guards were falling left and right, some screaming like girls.
Didn't expect flying rocks from the sky, eh?
They'd pay for insolent thought.
Now was their chance... Dameus nudged Zeth and both nodded, turning and running away.
The guards were surprised and surprisingly dumbfounded when they saw no more rocks magically dropping from the sky.
Also, when they saw the cloaks of two young boys flying into the darkness.
'Halt!! In the name of justice, you are both submitted to punishment of law!!'
...
HOW STUPID!! The guards thought they could persuade two senior thieves to actually accept punishment and let them be arrested.
...
How dumb.
And off dashed two thieves off towards the shadows, a nice day of thieving blessing them with gifts of bread, gold, and...
how ironic...
tea.
"Sorry..."
They advanced further into the darkness. Further and further.
