Tawny squeezed her eyes shut, the memory of the jagged beak piercing her heart returning to her. Yet, instead of a knife, she felt nothing. After a minute or so, she dared to open her eyes. Much to her surprise, she found that there were no longer any fairies at all. Her arms were supported, rather, by an elderly woman and a boy in his late teens.
"You are a very unlucky girl," the woman said, the ribbon trailing off of her headdress brushing against Tawny's ear, "But that was a lucky break."
PLOP!
The two strangers dropped her on the ground and proceeded to examine her with great interest. The old woman had violet eyes that were as deep as a river and a sort of mystic charm that hung about her. Her skin was old and sagging, yet had a cream-like complexion. She wore a simple brown dress that was far too long for her and fell around her ankles. Unlike the old women Tawny knew back home, she stood tall and proud, more like an aged tree then a wilting flower.
The boy standing next to her was almost two heads taller then she was. His hair was a deep, chestnut brown that was short, yet unruly, and he wore what looked like a cross between a kimono and a costume one would wear to a Rennaissance Fair. He was slightly more tan and looked at Tawny with curious grey eyes.
"Just who is this, Kora?" he asked, "She's wearing strange-looking clothing...and PANTS. Is she from the Wild Lands?"
The woman shot him a chastising glance. "My dear grandson," she said, "Have you no eyes? This girl is not of our world."
She stepped forward, extending her hand towards Tawny. Overcome with gratitude, Tawny sprang forward and hugged the woman, tears forming in her eyes.
"Thank you so much!" she blurted, "You s-saved my life!!"
The woman was stunned, unsure of what to do. The boy cast Tawny a nasty glance. Right away Tawny decided she didn't like this boy, no matter how cool his grandma was.

Scroll 5: A Promise
Try as she might, Tawny could not get the woman or the boy to speak to her. Instead, they pushed her along through the trees, the boy behind her and the woman in front, searching for something.
Finally, they came to a small circle of trees that had a strange purple tint. In the circle's center was a rock with a crescent moon with a rose floating in between its tips painted in purple.
Suddenly, there came a loud chorus of chirping birds, though Tawny could not see where they were, and a breeze, swirling within the circle as if it were trapped, brought a delicious scent she had never smelled before.
"What is that?" she asked in a mystified voice.
"Fyzunia," the woman said, turning towards Tawny and speaking to her for the first time since she had hugged her. "This is the only place in the world where they can survive. When you tried to knock the Fen over, the trees cried out to me."
Suddenly, she snapped out of her awe, the memory returning to her. So many questions! She had no idea where to begin.

“Okay,” she said, “First of all, where am I?”
Without blinking, the woman replied, “The Fyzunia Grove in the Forest of Fae, on the island of Fae.”
She continued to awnser Tawny’s questions in this same gruff, calm voice. “Why did the fairies attack me?” “You’re a faera.” “What’s a faera??” “A creature very similar to a fairy who feeds on fairy blood. They convert human beings into Faera by bringing them back from the brink of death.” “Even from other worlds?!” “These are the easiest prey, because people of our world already know of them.” “So-So I…but, I thought shwe was so nice! She was beautiful, but she…” “I don’t know who the faera you met was. Either her intentions were to create another soldier to help bring death to fairies, save your life because she honestly cared, or for for the same reasons humans want children, for this is the only way for them to reproduce.” “How could she have gotten to my world in the first place?” “World port.” “What’s that?” “Portals that appear, connecting worlds. World ports have been kept under strict control ever since Blackfang*, but some still randomly appear.” “There was…a man. I heard a man saying that he was going to close up the portal for her.” The woman looked at her, puzzled. “A man? All faera are female, and there’s no way one would travel with someone who isn’t faera. They’re far too proud for this.” “Well, I don’t know,” Tawny said, pressing her palm against her forehead, “I had a gaping hole in my stomach at the time.” “Ah,” the woman said, “Well, then, we must be hurrying.”
Without warning, she grabbed Tawny’s right arm and held it over the crescent moon. The rock glowed, and warmth spread rapidly up Tawny’s arm, then throughout her entire body. When the feeling subsided, Tawny looked down to see the marking gone. “Good,” she said, taking her hand back and rubbing where the marking used to be, “Now I won’t be attacked by any more crazy fairies. So!” She put her hands on her hips, “How do you plan on sending me home?” The two looked at each other, confused, then back at her. Tawny’s heart was like a stone sinking into water. “But-But there’s always a way! In every story I’ve read, the hero always finds a way home!” The two looked at each other, confused, then back again. “Check it out,” the boy said, “This shunza* thinks she’s a hero! Done anything heroic recently? Hm??” “Quiet!” the old woman snapped at him, “How many times have I told you not to swear? Besides, it isn’t as if you’ve any right to say what’s heroic!”
But Tawny wasn’t listening. Her vision blurred as she remembered the faera’s words: you will never be able to return to this world. She collapsed, exhaustion lowering her into darkness.
*Blackfang= There was a series that Arissa had planned on making where our two worlds collided. Her War-O self is the ruler of that world and is named Blackfang, so people of my world always refer to this time by "Blackfang."
*shunza= EXTREMELY disrespectful term for girl
