Nenuphar walked onto the noisy square, then ran into a deserted alleyway. There, out of sight, he changed back into the adorable female form and changed into a silver dress she had stolen a while back from an old seamstress.
She walked out onto the square and found an empty crate to stand on.
"Ladies and gentlemen!" she yelled especially loudly to be heard above all of the racket, "I am a travelling sorceress trying to earn enough for my boat fare. You see, I have a very special appointment with the king of werewolves that I must NOT be late for. Sadly, all of my money was taken by demons that were so powerful, even I couldn't handle them all!" She was pleased to see a crowd growing. Stretching her arms out wide, she continued. "So, to earn my way, I will perform amazing spells for you, dear mortals! I will transform into the object of your choice for merely one silver coin." She winked and held her skirt out to catch the coins, which she caught in abundance.
And now, the show begins, she thought.

Nenuphar changed into whatever she could hear of the babble from her excited audience. She changed into things as mundane as a cow or fish (that part of the audience had NO imagination) into things as bizarre as a pink elephant, a polka-dot wyvern, and an old, smelly shoe.
Customers came and went, and the pile kept growing and growing. Nenuphar yawned as she realized that the sun was setting. There was only one boy left holding out a wooden coin.
"It's all I have," he said, dejectedly.
Nenuphar smiled sweetly and took the coin, then threw it into a nearby gutter, giggling pleasently as she watched his face fall.
"Learn to listen, boy," she said, "It will serve you well."
She then took her pile and left.
